Garden history
The gardens at Whitstable Castle offer a serene and picturesque escape on the Kent coast, where history and nature meet in beautifully designed spaces. From formal lawns, tranquil walkways, and carefully designed spaces to vibrant spring blossoms, the gardens are the perfect setting for wedding photography, family outings, or quiet moments of reflection.

When Wynn Ellis extended the Castle building and laid out the gardens in the 1840's it is likely he would have known of the very popular Regency garden design style of that period. Unfortunately. no plans exist to show the garden layout hercreated although some experts believe it would have been Regency in character.
In the eighteenth century trees, shrubs and flowering plants were usually separate elements in the landscape garden. Trees were planted in straight lines as avenues of individually in lawns. Colourful flowering plants were commonly planted separately in flower gardens.

The Regency garden design style was characterised by sinuous gravel pathways and curving ornamental plant beds defining open lawn spaces as though they were glades in a woodland. The plant beds were filled with a mixture of colourful shrubs, herbaceous perennials and bulbs to provide interest throughout all seasons.
The restored gardens have been designed to re-create the character and ambiance of the garden spaces Wynn Ellis is thought to have created although plant species have not been restricted to those used in the mid-nineteenth century.
